Fertility Medications: Medications and Reproductive Prescription Drugs
Our Doctors and staff including IVF coordinators, will thoroughly explain each medication, as well as usage and dosing requirements. The following reproductive medications are commonly prescribed for fertility treatments:
Clomid: Clomiphene Citrate: Clomiphene is structurally similar to Estrogen, occupying the estrogen receptors in the pituitary gland in the brain. With perceived deficiency of estrogen Pituitary gland releases higher levels of Follicle Stimulating Hormone, and thus increasing the number of Follicles (eggs) that grow and are released in a cycle.Clomiphene is a tablet that is taken by mouth once a day for 5 days.
Lupron: GnRH agonist is an injectable that occupies GnRH receptors on the pituitary gland, thus supressing its capability to release endogenous FSH and LH, allowing is to help stimulate a cohort of follicles and prevent premature release of mature follicles. Lupron is a sub q injectable that comes in a 2 week kit with insulin syringes.You will need two kits for your stimulaiton cycle.
Gonadotropins: these are glycoprotiens produced by the human pituitary gland to stimulate and subsequently release the mature Oocytes. they are administered in the form of a subcutaneous injections. Commercial Formulations of Gonadotropins available:
• Bravelle
• Menopur
• Follistim
• Gonal F
• Luveris – recombinant LH 75 IU
2nd generation of these hormones are made by recombinant DNA technology
HCG Trigger: Much like the Natural trigger from pituitary (LH), HCG triggers the final maturation and release of mature Follicle / Oocyte. HCG Ovidrel : 250 mcg sub q.
Luteal Phase Support with Progesterone: Normally produced by the Corpus luteum in human body, progesterone is a hormone essential in maintaining early pregnancy.
• Progesterone in Oil: injectactable im.
• Crinone Gel: 8% inserted vaginally every night during the luiteal phase.
Estrogen: administered during the luteal phase after the egg retrieval to improve pregnancy rates. Vivelle Dot: 0.1mg/day Estrace taken orally
MethylPrednisone: in selected cases 16mg is taken orally from the day of egg retrieval until the day of embryo transfer. Growth Hormone
Baby Aspirin: 81 mg oral taken daily
Prenatal Vitamins, Folic Acid: 0.4mg taken daily orally
